February 17-18, 2022 | 8:00a - 5:00p CST | Online

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Weight training can be a powerful recovery tool for trauma survivors. Considering that more than 50% of all adults in the U.S. have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lifetime, as personal trainers and coaches, we are guaranteed to work with trauma survivors, whether we are aware of it or not. Learn how to use weight training to build and foster strength and resilience — inside and out — in the face of trauma.

This 30 hour workshop is designed for trainers, coaches, physical therapists, and movement practitioners that actively train clients with any weight training modality (please note that 16 hours are held synchronously and the remaining asynchronously through our online learning system). Mental health clinicians are also encouraged and welcome to attend. Due to the nature of the material, attendance will be capped to allow for deeper discussion and workshopping.

This workshop will combine lecture, discussion, demonstrations, real life case examples and opportunities for applied, (virtual) hands-on learning. The structure of this training will be a combination of synchronous in person sessions and asynchronous self-directed activities such as readings, videos, reflections and assignments to apply your learning.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Learn about the definitions and differences between chronic stress, trauma, PTSD, Complex PTSD, and complex trauma

  • Learn about the theory and research behind weight lifting as an adjunctive treatment for trauma survivors

  • Learn the neurophysiological, psychological and emotional toll of traumatic experiences

  • Develop an understanding of specific trauma-informed considerations for building and maintaining safety in fitness/gym spaces, as well as in relationships with clients and athletes

  • Learn how your personal biases and perspectives may support or hinder your client’s process

  • Begin the process to position yourself as a safe and effective part of your client’s healing journey

Note

This program is for professional development and learning. We recognize that although many of us may have experiences of trauma, the time we spend together will not be an intervention for our own individual healing. Talking and learning about trauma, even in the context of a training, can be triggering.

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Scholarship

We offer a limited number of full scholarships as a part of our diversity, equity and inclusion initiative. The purpose of this scholarship is to expand the reach of the TIWL program and to address health disparities by engaging professionals who will commit to providing TIWL services to a range of historically disadvantaged and high-risk groups impacted by traumatic stress. As a program, we respect the data that shows individuals seeking care tend to be best served by providers who come from their same or similar community or cultural milieu, especially when considering marginalized communities, or peoples who have experienced systemic discrimination. We will take this into consideration in our decision-making process.

Please refer to this document for more detailed information: Purpose, Description, and Requirements
